From: david wood [mailto:wood.dh@gmail.com ] Sent: Friday, March 07, 2008 4:28 PM To: Ron Kolar Subject: correspondence Ron, I much appreciated hearing from you and was overwhelmed by your newsletter. What a great professional publication! I was proud of ours at one time but now on second look it reminds me more of a high school journal run off on a mimeograph. Remembers those? The idea of using ads certainly helps defray the cost of printing. When we print our summer bulletin I will send you a copy. I am impressed at how much the Association is doing and the apparent level of volunteers. This seems to be our greatest problem, with the exception of raising funds to support the milfoil program, and the number of volunteers who search for milfoil while out boating or fishing. This past summer they contributed 849 hours to our grant-in-aid program and as you know this qualifies for $10 per hour. That is our best fund raiser and provides a service at the same time. I haven't followed through with the material you gave me concerning the necessary paperwork to obtain a tax free status but it is still on the agenda.. Cliff Aiken and I of the Federation of Vt Lakes met with David Deen, chairman of the House Fish and Wildlife Committee, last fall to discuss the plight of the Vermont lakes and ponds and the need to fund the Grant-in-Aid program the way it was intended. He immediately picked up on the required water craft sticker program in Maine and subsequently had a bill written and introduced to the legislature on January 29. At this point I can't see that it is making very much progress, but should it be approved it would put more monies into our lake programs. The bill includes more than just the sticker requirement as it really is a rewrite of the invasive species law..I really believe the Lakes and Ponds needs to change their priorities and give more funds to lake with preventative programs as apposed to lakes managing milfoil. The cost discrepancy is great and no one has successfully removed milfoil from the lakes, and more interesting, all lakes with preventative programs have not had an invasion.Put your money where it works! Let's keep in touch, Dave
